From the Camera to the Finished Portrait
Every great portrait still begins with great photography.
AI doesn't replace the photographer, and it doesn't replace the skills that go into creating a beautiful portrait.
Lighting matters. Posing matters. Expression matters. Lens choice, perspective, composition, color and attention to detail all matter.
Those are the elements we create at the time of your portrait session.
The difference is that we are no longer necessarily limited to the physical environment surrounding you when the photograph is made.
Sometimes the perfect background already exists.
Sometimes we photograph it ourselves.
And sometimes, the background we envision doesn't exist at all.
That's where things get interesting.
We Can Photograph a Real Location and Bring It Into Your Portrait
Over the years, I have photographed countless locations, architectural details, landscapes and interesting environments.
Those photographs can become part of an entirely new portrait.
Imagine being photographed in the studio where we have complete control over the lighting and then having your finished portrait seamlessly placed into an environment that I photographed somewhere else.
This gives us the best of both worlds.
We have the controlled lighting, flattering posing and attention to detail of a professional portrait session while also having the beauty and character of an actual location.
It also opens up possibilities that would otherwise be difficult because of weather, travel, crowds, accessibility, lighting conditions or simply the logistics of creating a portrait at a particular location.
What If the Perfect Background Doesn't Exist?
That's where AI has become an exciting addition to our creative toolbox.
We can now design a background specifically around the portrait rather than simply choosing from backgrounds that already exist.
Instead of asking, “Which background should we use?”
We can ask:
“What would make this portrait extraordinary?”
Perhaps that is an elegant Italian villa.
A cobblestone street.
A romantic European café.
An Old World interior.
A dramatic fine-art painted environment.
A beautiful garden that exists only in our imagination.
A rustic West Virginia landscape.
Or something completely unique to you.
AI gives us the ability to begin creating that environment, but it is still only one part of the process.

Francesca Aloi: Creating Something Personal
A recent portrait of Francesca Aloi, last year's West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival Queen, is a wonderful example of what is now possible.
During our conversation, Francesca mentioned that her favorite Italian restaurant is Muriale's Italian Kitchen.
That gave me an idea.
Rather than simply placing her portrait against a generic background, I decided to take a little creative license and create an environment inspired by that connection.
We created a vibrant Italian streetscape with the feeling of an Old World Italian village—a beautiful cobblestone street, flowers, warm architecture and a charming Italian restaurant bearing the name Muriale's Cucina Italiana.
The result wasn't intended to document an actual place.
It was intended to create a feeling.
Francesca's portrait remained the foundation of the finished piece, but the environment allowed us to tell a richer and much more personal story.

That's the part of this technology that excites me most.
It isn't simply about replacing a background.
It's about creating a portrait that has meaning.
AI Is a Tool, Not the Artist
There is an important distinction between generating an image and creating a portrait.
We aren't interested in pressing a button and allowing artificial intelligence to decide what your portrait should look like.
Instead, we use AI much like we use our cameras, lenses, lighting equipment and editing tools—as another instrument available to the artist.
We determine the concept.
We determine the lighting.
We determine the composition.
We determine the colors, perspective, atmosphere and mood.
And most importantly, we photograph the person.
The goal isn't to create an artificial version of you.
The goal is to use new technology to expand what we can create around you.
Making the Background Believable
Creating a background is only the beginning.
For a finished portrait to be convincing, the subject and environment have to belong together.
The direction of light needs to make sense.
The perspective needs to match.
The apparent camera height and lens perspective need to feel natural.
The depth of field needs to be believable.
Highlights and shadows need to interact properly.
Color needs to be harmonious.
The scale of architectural elements needs to look correct.
Even small details can determine whether the viewer sees a beautifully finished portrait or immediately notices that the background has been replaced.
Our goal is for the background to support the portrait rather than compete with it.
When everything works together, you shouldn't be thinking about the technique.
You should simply enjoy the portrait.
